Eklavya Technology Channel is a distant learning joint initiative between the IIT and IGNOU. It was inaugurated by Prof. Murli Manohar Joshi, Honourable Minister, HRD, S&T and Ocean Development on 26 January 2003.
The objective of this initiative is to bring to the audience the actual IIT classrooms virtually at their door steps. It is a channel dedicated to technical education and shall run programs generated at different IITs. The channel is designed to carry video courses in different disciplines generated at various IITs on weekdays and special interest programs on Sundays. Currently, eight complete courses are being run in parallel, contributed by IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Madras and are repeated in the same sequence without a break.
The SWAYAM PRABHA is a group of 32 DTH channels devoted to telecasting of high-quality educational programmes on 24X7 basis using the GSAT-15 satellite. Every day, there will be new content for at least (4) hours which would be repeated 5 more times in a day, allowing the students to choose the time of their convenience. The channels are uplinked from BISAG, Gandhinagar. The contents are provided by NPTEL, IITs, UGC, CEC, IGNOU, NCERT and NIOS. The INFLIBNET Centre maintains the web portal.
The DTH Channels shall cover the following:
Two-step process for configuring and installing DD Free Dish and Settop box, generally available with all TV dealers for less than Rs. 2,000/-, is as follows:
Step 1 : Install DD Fresh Dish as per the directions given at: http://ddindia.gov.in/Technical/Pages/DD-Free-Dish-(DTH).aspx
Step 2 : Set following parameters in the Set-top box for SWAYAM PRABHA Channels:
a) Parameters for SWAYAM PRABHA channel No.1 to 16: Downlink Frequency: - 11590 MHz Polarization: - Vertical LNB Frequency: - 9750 Symbol Rate: - 29500 Ksps FEC: 3/4
(b) Parameters for SWAYAM PRABHA channel No. 17 to 32: Downlink Frequency: - 11670 MHz Polarization: - Vertical LNB Frequency: - 9750 Symbol Rate: - 29500 Ksps FEC: 3/4
IIT-Professor Assisted Learning or IIT-PAL was recently launched under the SwayamPrabha channels of HRD ministry. All an aspirant needs is internet connectivity or a DTH setup for TV. From the comfort of their homes, aspirants in the cities as well as remote villages could watch lectures on physics, chemistry and mathematics. There are also lectures in biology as it’s an essential ingredient of the IIT foundation courses. IIT-Delhi in charge of the project that also has as partners IITs from Mumbai, Kanpur, Chennai, Kharagpur and Guwahati. Some KendriyaVidyalaya teachers have also contributed to the lecture bank. So far, IIT-D has recorded over 600 hours of video content that’s available via satellite TV and YouTube.
Each subject has its own free-to-air DTH channel that transmits fresh content as per a fixed course schedule for four hours daily (two each for classes XI and XII). This is repeated six times a day so that a student could watch it as per his/her convenience. So far, the instruction only consists of recorded lectures. But soon, downloadable e-learning material apart from ‘doubt clearing’ sessions would go live too.
The main objective of the initiative is to assist the students of Class XI and XII who are IIT aspirants. The lectures that are delivered by experts in the specific subjects will help the students understand basic concepts in a very simple way. It will also help the socially and the economically backward students prepare for the IIT exam.
The SWAYAM PRABHA is conceived as a group of 32 DTH channels devoted to telecasting of high-quality educational programmes on 24X7 basis using the GSAT-15 satellite.
There are 4 channels under IIT-Pal for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The videos under these channels are recorded mainly by IIT Delhi Professors.
